Open Gate Weapon Detection System Information

The Liberty County School District will be introducing a weapons detection system this year to assist in keeping our students and staff safe. This system will be utilized during morning arrival as well as random times at Liberty County High School, Tolar K-8 School, Hosford School, sporting events, and other locations where students may gather. We plan to implement this process later this week. Please be patient with us as we roll out this new safety measure for our students.

Please review the information below with your student(s) to help prepare them for this new process.

Upon arrival at the screening area students will:

· Remove any items that may cause the weapons detection system to alert, such as Chromebooks, laptops, or three ring binders.

· Wear backpack on both arms.

· Walk at a normal pace through the screening area.

· If there are no alerts the student can retrieve their items from the screener on the other side of the screening area and proceed to their destination.

If there is an alert the student will:

· Place the backpack on the secondary screening table and walk back through the screening area.

· If cleared, the student will stand on the opposite side of the table while an administrator searches the student’s backpack.

· Items that may cause an alert will be removed and the administrator will walk the backpack through the screening area.

· Continued alerts will result in additional searches of the backpack and removal of items until the backpack clears.

· Once there are no alerts, the student can retrieve their items and proceed to their destination.

Other items that may cause an alert:

· Eyeglass case

· Pencil/altoids tin

· Collapsible umbrella and

· Some eyelash curlers

Students are asked to only bring essential items with them to school to assist in the smooth and timely entry onto the school property.

Please note the weapons detection system may be utilized at entry points of sporting events, awards days, or other school related events where students are gathered. The intent is not to cause any inconvenience, but to do all that we can to ensure our students safety. The General public should plan accordingly if you attend any school sponsored event.
